Sophie watches Wild Parrots

We just watched the movie The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill. As soon as Sophie heard the bird sounds, she climbed onto the DVD player and stared. She stayed there watching for about two-thirds of the movie, after which she got bored and went away. But she came back for the conclusion. She’s never been interested in a movie before. (The photo is washed out because I had to use the flash.)

Sophie is fixed

Sophie came back yesterday morning from the vet, where she was spayed on Tuesday. She’s doing fine, but she was very glad to come back home.

She may have been a little groggy right at first, but she quickly got back to her normal mischief. Tuesday evening, while I was trying to read, she lay in my lap and tried to bite the buttons off my shirt. She’s also discovered that it’s fun to drink from the faucet in the bathroom while I’m brushing my teeth.

She went into heat for a couple of days at the beginning of the month. (We had already scheduled the spaying for this week.) It was a sight to see when Willy tried to respond to her yowling. He apparently had a vague memory of the routine. He stood over her, biting her neck and treading her flank with his hind paw. But after a minute or two of that, he couldn’t remember what to do next. He would stop still for a moment and then walk away with a confused look in his eye.

Riley

We met lots of dogs on our trip. This is Riley, a six-month-old pug who belongs to the newly-wed couple.

Kai and his foster family

We picked up Kai on Monday morning. He’d been taken care of by our new friends John (in the photo), his wife Debbie (who is Arlin’s dental hygienist), and their Boston terriers Annie and Big Boy. As you can see, he was quite happy there.

Sophie’s new mouse

We’re back from Minnesota (more on the trip later). Ruth sent a couple of toy mice back for the cats. Sophie loves hers. Willy’s still not interested in toys. Both cats were very glad to see us, though.

Willy adjusts to Sophie

Willy isn’t exactly friendly to Sophie yet, but he’s stopped most of his yowling and hissing. You can see from the photo how upset he is.

“Junior” is now “Sophie”

sophie 2006-09-02, originally uploaded by Phil Youngholm.

We took Junior to the vet, and he turned out to be a girl, so we renamed her Sophie. She has settled right in. She’s 7 pounds, 9 ounces, and about a year old. The vet thought she had recently had a litter of kittens, which could account for the kittens people have been seeing and hearing around the neighborhood in the last few weeks. (The kittens seem to be gone now. We hope they were all rescued and adopted.)
