Nevin (the cat)

Nevin was taking a walk with Kai and me this afternoon and happened to climb up on this low wall next to the BART station to pose for his portrait.
He disappeared for a week a little while ago, and we were afraid he’d abandoned us or suffered a mishap. But one morning just as I was taking Kai out for his pre-dawn walk, I heard his unmistakable meowing from way down the BART plaza, and he came to greet us, hungry but in good shape.

Sophie helps again

Sophie is the helpingest cat! Sunday evening Arlin decided to wash the futon cover from the living room futon sofa. As soon as we started to take the cover off, she jumped onto the futon and lay down. Every time we picked her up and put her on the floor, she jumped back. We had to double-up the futon to pry off the cover, while watching to make sure we weren’t suffocating Sophie in the folds. Then, when it came time to put the clean cover back on, she insisted on helping again, by crawling under the cover and attacking Arlin while he tried to zip it up.
Meanwhile, we had to empty the dictionary stand in order to move it, though we’re not sure where it will go yet. It’s now in the middle of the living room, and both cats have decided its shelves are a great place to perch.

Kai and I launch our media career

A few months ago, a non-profit called Bay Area Alliance for Sustainable Communities contacted our homeowners’ association asking for volunteers to be interviewed for a video they were making about housing. I volunteered, and a few weeks later a video crew showed up. The producer was very taken with Kai, and insisted that he be part of the interview.

The result was “Building Communities We Care About”, which was posted on their Web site yesterday:
http://www.bayareaalliance.org/video.html
You can see the video full-screen here:
http://www.bayareaalliance.org/media/BAASC.swf

Our segment is 10 minutes and 30 seconds in, so if you plan to watch, you may want to bring up the Web page, go make yourself a cup of coffee, and come back 10 minutes later. Unfortunately, there’s no way to fast-forward. Keep watching after our segment appears to be over, because we come back.

There is other footage from our community around 7 minutes and 30 seconds in, where they used part of another interview they did the same day with two of our neighbors.

Kai’s new friend

This young cat has attached itself to our neighborhood in the last month or so. It’s so friendly, it walks up to just about anybody (people walking to and from BART, for instance) and rolls over to be played with. Several of the households (including ours) are feeding it, and we’re planning to get together and have it neutered. It was a little skittish about Kai at first, but now it’s decided he’s a friend, too. It follows us around the complete circuit when we take a walk, and it tries to ambush Kai. We’re not sure if the cat is male or female. One of our neighbors has named it Nevin.
