Squirrel!

Kai is apparently feeling much better. He and Chester found a squirrel in a tree yesterday at Point Isabel. It kept them occupied for five or ten minutes. Several times Kai even tried to jump from the ground to the tree branch, as he often does when he’s enthusiastic.

Kai is recovering

Kai is doing well, except for one thing: he scratches the left (shaved) side of his neck. It became red and swollen, and we had to go to our vet for antibiotics. Curiously, he doesn’t scratch the incision, which is healing nicely. The clown collar doesn’t help much, so he’s now wearing a sock on his left hind foot, and that seems to have done the trick. He doesn’t like to take his medicine, but who does?

Poor Kai

He looks like he’s wearing a clown’s ruffle. Is he getting ready to run away to join the circus?

Kai is home

Kai’s surgery went well. His left thyroid was removed. The surgeons think they got most of the malignant cells, but they can’t be sure, so we’ll see an oncologist in two weeks, when the pathology report is in.

He has a four-inch incision running right down the middle of his neck. He has to stay quiet now, which won’t be a problem for him but may be a problem for Chester.

He’s in good spirits but weak and groggy.

The photo was taken right after we left the hospital by the student who did our intake on Monday. She happened to be walking by while we stopped for Kai to pee.

Kai needs surgery

Kai has a thyroid tumor. It’s almost certainly cancer, but there’s no metastasis, and with surgery his prognosis is good. So he’s having it removed on Friday at the veterinary teaching hospital at UC Davis.

He’s in good spirits and it doesn’t seem to be causing him any pain. We found out because he’s lost 6 pounds (about ten percent of his weight) since January.

Coco and I took both dogs to Davis on Monday. Chester was remarkably good, and Kai of course was perfect. He was pronounced best patient of the day by the radiology department.

The photo shows both of them waiting in the examination room. It was an extremely busy day for the clinic. We had to wait a long time, but the students, doctors, and staff were wonderful.
