Report from the Northeast

Hurricane_irene

If it is well and truly winding down, then we did o.k. here. Still some gusty winds, but basement is dry and only one irritating but manageable limb down in the back yard. This tree was uprooted next to the dog park, but luckily leaned the other way. A couple of other trees down on the “greenie” (the grassy strip between Columbia Road and the beach). Most times, I am pleased to be living in the midst of trees and parks; today, not so much.

Happy Kai = Happy Family

Kai looks so happy to be back with his girls and the rest of the family (even Chester). I hope he is feeling as good as he looks.

Kai is home for another weekend

Bianca, Coco, Chester, and I all went to Davis on Friday to pick up Kai after his second week of radiation therapy. He was overjoyed to see us when the technician brought him out.

Here we are on a bench outside the hospital, waiting for the pharmacy to make up our prescription. Kai has two new drugs to take — an antibiotic and an anti-inflammatory — along with the thyroid supplement he’s been taking since the surgery.

Kai

Kai had his fifth radiation treatment today. He has them on weekdays at UC Davis veterinary hospital. He is staying with Dawn, a veterinary technician on weeknights and comes home on weekends. I had the privilege of delivering him yesterday and he was such a good boy. It was heartbreaking to leave him there: he turned and looked back repeatedly, skidding his feet on the slippery floor as he was led into the exam room.

Since the surgery, he has been so energetic and happy. Even after his first three radiation treatment last week, he was so full of life. We don’t expect that he will be so energetic as the treatments go on, but this first weekend sure was encouraging to us … and I hope Kai is encouraged by his progress, too.

We will know more later, of course, but for now Kai is doing pretty well.

Kai’s first radiation therapy

We made a day trip to UC Davis on Monday 8/15 for Kai to have a CT scan. Then we took him back in on Wednesday for the start of radiation therapy. He had his first three days of radiation therapy Wednesday-Friday and came home Friday afternoon.
He’s doing well so far. His coat is regrowing where it was shaved for the surgery. There’s more spring in his step, and he has enough energy to wrestle with Chester.

I’m getting tired of the fifty-mile drive to Davis, though, but I shouldn’t complain. Some people would love to have a commute that short. And Arlin has volunteered to make the drive tomorrow morning, when Kai goes back for a full week of treatments.

Back to normal — for a short while

Moving too fast for the iPhone camera to capture, Chester and Kai are playing with the pink pig.

We went to UC Davis vet hospital for Kai’s oncology consult yesterday. As everyone pretty much already knew, the pathology report showed that Kai’s tumor was malignant. Although surgery removed most of the malignancy, the surgeons and oncologists are certain that some cells were left behind, and without further treatment the cancer will just regrow, probably within months. So they’re recommending both radiation (to kill the remaining malignant cells) and follow-up chemotherapy (to prevent spread), and we’re going to go ahead with this plan. This means Kai will spend most of the next four weeks in Davis getting his radiation therapy.

We hope to board him up there from Monday through Friday, and have him home on the weekends.
