Sleeping dogs?

I don’t know where Betsy got the idea that these dogs ever sleep.

It’s a puppy pile! But I’d like to know how my bed became the clubhouse.

Betsy got a new smart phone

Unfortunately at the moment it is smarter than she. But it looks awful pretty in its pink case even if she can’t figure out how to use it!

Kai is recovering from pneumonia

Just over a week ago (Friday, December 14), we brought Kai to our vet because he was obviously not feeling well. He didn’t want to go out for his early-morning walk, and he didn’t want to eat his breakfast — and when he finally did go out, he appeared to have trouble urinating. The vet kept him all day and finally arranged for us to take him to the emergency room at UC Davis veterinary hospital that evening.

Our obvious concern was that it might be a recurrence of his cancer, but it turned out that he had pneumonia. He stayed at Davis four nights, and we picked him up Tuesday afternoon. He’s responding well to antibiotics and he’s returning to his normal energy and good spirits.

The urinary problem appears to be unrelated, and is still something of a mystery. X-rays and ultrasound have pretty much ruled out obstruction. The doctors think it may be neurological. He’s on a medication to relax his urethra. If it’s still a problem after his pneumonia clears up, we’ll pursue it then.

Weasel

Fritz has been with us six weeks now. He’s doing remarkably well for a young terrier, which means he’s both a joy and a challenge. We’re still teaching him such things as what he can chew and what he can’t chew, and not to bark at the cats to try to get them to play.

We often call him “the weasel”, because he’s small and quick and sly. He loves to get into the cat food and the litter boxes (he’s a poop eater), and he can go just about anywhere the cats can go. Theoretically, we’re smarter than he is, but we still haven’t quite found a solution that lets the cats come and go freely but keeps Fritz away. We may have to install electronic cat doors that recognize the cats by chip or by a magnetic tag on the collar.

When he’s not getting into mischief he’s a charmer. He loves to climb into laps and curl up.

Yesterday he somehow got himself tangled up in the sheets while I was out of the bedroom, and I was able to get this picture.

Molluscan group sex?

P1010170
Helix aspersa in the throes of passion. It ain’t pretty, but that’s nature. I’m not an experienced observer, but I think I can see a love dart or two (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Love_darts).
