Altar for Day of the Dead

We made a Day of the Dead altar (see http://www.celebrate-day-of-the-dead.com/day-of-the-dead-altars.html) to celebrate Kai and the other animals that have been in our lives. It’s not elaborate as these things go, but it was fun to put together, and it really does help us remember all those wonderful animals who gave us so much.

To give proper credit… Betsy did 90% of the work.

He (tarantula, not Phil) has been relocated twice now from the lawn and the patio but keeps showing up again.

Kai’s farewell

Kai left us on Friday, October 24. He was a couple of months over 12 years old.

He was creaky with arthritis this past year, but always happy, and even playful at times. He enjoyed roaming our five acres here in the country with the other dogs, but mostly he slept in a corner of the kitchen where he could keep in touch with everyone.

He started to decline quite suddenly and rapidly early last week, and on Thursday morning he walked about 20 yards down the hill and lay down. He refused food and couldn’t keep water down after drinking, and he didn’t move under his own power again.

On Friday morning we took him to the vet and comforted him while he was put to rest.

I suspect his cancer had come back, but we don’t really know. He’d had a clean checkup at UC Davis in the spring and was due for another one. But it was clear any major intervention at this point would just be painful for him and for us, so we let him go peacefully.

Finally, a tarantula!

We haven’t seen a tarantula until today, and now we’ve seen three. It’s about time. The Tarantula Festival is barely a week away.

Willy the hunter

Just to show us that Fritz isn’t the only one who can catch game, Willy caught a Jerusalem cricket, brought it to the kitchen door, and ate it.

No brag, just fact

We entered some photos in a fundraiser contest for the Pawsitively Pet Food Pantry and the Eastern Madera County SPCA. The contest is sponsored annually by the Oakhurst Feed and Pet Supply store. And in our first outing, we won three prizes!

Second place in the category Animals Variety went to Callix and his new BFF, Trona Buck. (Photo by Betsy)

Third place in the category Animals Variety went to Chester and Willie. (Photo by Phil)

We are all quite proud of ourselves and already thinking about next year!
