Josie is a six-month-old Goldendoodle (golden retriever and poodle mix)
who adores Kai. She and her owner work next door to us.

Kai couldn’t wait to get into the water at Pt. Isabel today. The tide
was low, so he could stand up about a dozen feet out. Every time he
swam out for the ball and returned to where he could stand, he would let
the ball go and bat it around with his paw. He was fascinated by the
way it would disappear into the water and then bob back up.

At Point Isabel this afternoon Kai went all the way into the water and swam. He’s been fascinated by the other dogs that retrieve balls thrown into the water, but he’s been too scared to go in himself. Today he finally took the plunge–literally. Curiously, he was watching another dog named Kai retrieve a tennis ball when he more or less fell in and found he actually liked it.

I saw this on my lunchtime walk with Kai. Psychedelic! The dollar bill is to show how big it is — at least six inches in diameter.

You probably won’t see this sort of thing again for years. We dressed
up to spend a night at the Westin St. Francis on Union Square, at
Thrivent’s expense. It was a sales recognition event.
