Kai has a thyroid tumor. It’s almost certainly cancer, but there’s no metastasis, and with surgery his prognosis is good. So he’s having it removed on Friday at the veterinary teaching hospital at UC Davis.
He’s in good spirits and it doesn’t seem to be causing him any pain. We found out because he’s lost 6 pounds (about ten percent of his weight) since January.
Coco and I took both dogs to Davis on Monday. Chester was remarkably good, and Kai of course was perfect. He was pronounced best patient of the day by the radiology department.
The photo shows both of them waiting in the examination room. It was an extremely busy day for the clinic. We had to wait a long time, but the students, doctors, and staff were wonderful.

But, we are pleased and relieved to know you have confidence in a place you can bring him. I know that this can be very difficult, since Kai can’t tell you very much about how he feels, and you want to do ANYTHING that will help. Please know that we are thinking of you and Arlin and Kai and Chester and whatever or whomever else may be inhabiting the roost these days.
